How my production roles team up with other production roles

During the rehearsal process, I found out very quickly that props and set are very heavily linked together.

I particularly found this out when creating the telephone for the prison as I realised that I needed to liaise with the set production team to discuss colour, size, design and the placement of the prop. Luckily, I managed to team up with Lauren who was on set, and we managed to brainstorm some ideas and create a prop that we were both happy with. It was very important for us to have worked together on this as I may have created something that would not have fit in with their plans for set and would have wasted time and trod on some toes.

It is also vital that props and set work together as the overall appearance and stage picture would be negatively impacted by individuals taking over on certain parts, and not

BOAL

Boal Exercise <- link

Boal exercises were a really valuable part of the rehearsal process for Bad Girls. Using these exercises, we were able to really get in touch with our characters which will make our performances believable and realistic which will really engage our audience and make the entire play really enjoyable.

The exercise I chose to show the class and get them involved with was; One Story Told by Several People:

I think this technique would be really good during rehearsals in bad girls as it will allow us to get used to adding movement to dialogue, to communicate with body language when we do not have dialogue and also help us to think on our feet which is always good as you never know what may go wrong in a live performance: the following video is my technique in action with my classmates;

TO DO

Production Roles Analysis
Why is it important to share a disciplined approach to performance work?
It is vital to remain focused as there are milestones of time that are needed to be maintained in order for the process to run smoothly. Time management is very important in any process, including theatre. It also makes for good cast morale as everyone is on the same age and content and no-one feels more responsible than an other, as this can lead to disagreements and an unhappy rehearsal environment. It is also vitally important that production teams wok hard with performers as when all the pieces are tied together, it is an entire team effort. For example; It is important that I spoke to the cast members whose props I was dealing with as I wanted to make sure that they were happy with decisions I was making. Based on this, I had a conversation with Megan and Ben about the Radio I was going to create to ask them how they imagined it to be and what they were comfortable with, and we managed to come up with and idea that worked for all three of us. I then created the Radio and, hopefully, it was something that we were all very happy with.

What do you think are your main challenges?
A main challenge of mine is going to be maintaining focus and not losing motivation. I think that I have, in the past, found myself lacking some motivation and fallen into low morale, but it is important for me, and with respect for my own cast, if I maintain focused and manage my time right, everything should run smoothly. I think my main challenges are going to be the final stages of the prop process. Making sure that I have everything and that is needed for the show, so that there are not empty spaces and mimed props because something has been forgotten. I also think that I may struggle with making sure that I have enough time for every last part of the prop making process as I know that we are on a tight schedule and I have other responsibilities to the show as well.

Why were you interested in the production role you have selected?
I am very interested in the production role I have chosen as I have never had such a large responsibility to a show before. I have also always been very interested in creating props but have never had the opportunity to do so, so am glad of the role I have accepted. I am also looking forward to working alongside the other production roles and seeing the end result of all our hard work pulled together.

What would you like to achieve in this production?

What I made:
Prison Phone:

Based on the images I have found on the internet of what phones in prison look like, I think that creating a prop phone for the play will be quite simple. I have found some materials that I could use, within the workshop at college;

Old Rotary Phone:

Some cardboard:

Spray Paint:

Hot Glue Gun:

I thought that I could really easily make a phone by cutting the box to shape, removing the handheld part of the phone from the base and then sticking the phone and a rest to the box using the hot glue gun. Finally I would spray paint it blue to make it look realistic and slightly metallic. Lauren and I followed these steps and managed to create something that we were really proud of, and a really beneficial addition to our play, the set and the overall look of the set. Below is the finished product:
